Aruna Miller, lieutenant governor of Maryland and an alumna of Missouri S&T, will speak at the university Wednesday, Dec. 4 for the Chancellor’s Speaker Series.
Miller’s presentation will begin at 5 p.m. in the Innovation Lab Forum on the S&T campus, with a reception to follow. Those interested in attending the free event should RSVP at speakerseries.mst.edu.
In her talk, titled “STEM to Leadership: Solving for Tomorrow Beyond Engineering,” Miller will discuss her career in public service and how a foundation in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, can open doors to roles outside of the traditional scope of engineering.
Miller, a 1989 civil engineering graduate of Missouri S&T, is the second woman to serve as her state’s lieutenant governor and first woman of color and immigrant elected to one of Maryland’s statewide offices. She was born in India and immigrated to the United States when she was seven years old.
A long-time transportation engineer, Miller also served as a Maryland state delegate for several years before being sworn in as lieutenant governor in 2023.
Some of her policy focus areas include transportation, mental health, STEM equity and building a state where no one is left behind.
The Chancellor’s Speaker Series was established in 2023 to bring notable speakers to the S&T campus community to discuss topics of importance within society and encourage the creative exchange of thoughts and ideas.
Past speakers have included former U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt; Gary White, an S&T alumnus and Water.org and WaterEquity CEO and co-founder; Dr. Sharon Walker, dean of Drexel University’s College of Engineering; and former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft.
More information about the event can be found on the speaker series website.
