Missouri S&T events highlight Black History Month

Black History Month is typically celebrated in February, but Missouri S&T’s activities this year started in January and will continue into March.

These include:

  • Dr. Frank Vaught Jr. met with students on Friday, Jan. 26, and discussed discuss key leadership principles they can implement in their professional and personal lives. That evening he presented a talk for the public titled “Building Community Through Collaboration and Mentorship” in Leach Theatre.
  • The strategic diversity initiatives team hosted a screening of the movie Hidden Figures and trivia for students at the university’s Diversity House on Friday, Feb. 9.
  • S&T’s Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) hosted “NSBE Secret Valentine” for students on Valentine’s Day (Wednesday, Feb. 14).
  • The strategic diversity initiatives team will host a screening of the movie Tuskegee Airmen and trivia for students at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at the university’s Diversity House.
  • The Black Gems student organization will host “Dinner to Jazz” at the Signature Event Center, located at 1701 Martin Springs Drive in Rolla. This event will feature jazz, food, awards and more. Tickets are $20 for S&T students and $35 for faculty and guests.
  • The strategic diversity initiatives team will host “Night to Network” at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, for students at the Hasselmann Alumni House. Registration is required for students. Employers will meet and network with registered students the night prior to the Career Fair.
  • The campus community is invited to enjoy a student gospel choir performance and soul food dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at the at the Signature Event Center, located at 1701 Martin Springs Drive in Rolla. This event is free to students, staff and faculty. Please register online.
  • Missouri S&T will host a Pre-College Initiative weekend Feb. 29-March 3. PCI is an on-campus visit program for school students interested in careers in STEM fields. Through information sessions and activities, students will learn about career options and gain a better understanding of college life. PCI is sponsored by Missouri S&T’s student chapters of the National Society of Black Engineers, Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers and Society of Women Engineers.
  • George B. Vashon Museum field trip: March 9 for S&T students. Student Diversity Initiatives will provide a free field trip to the George B. Vashon Museum of African American History in St. Louis on Saturday, March 9, for students. A box lunch will be provided. Please register online.
