Missouri S&T won several awards from the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) at its recent conference in Tampa, Fla.
“It’s incredibly gratifying to see the high standards that drive the work our students and faculty do each and every day recognized by ASEM,” says Dr. David Enke, Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor of engineering management and systems engineering (EMSE) and interim chair of the department. “The excellence across our program becomes more apparent each year.”
Based on votes cast by conference participants, Missouri S&T’s student case-study team placed first in the in-person competition held at the conference, and second in the virtual competition that took place in September. Four senior engineering management students comprised the team:
The students were given four hours to analyze an engineering management-based case study. They then had 20 minutes to present their recommendations. The team was advised by Dr. Joan Schuman, associate teaching professor of engineering management and systems engineering.
S&T also won the Founders Award for the best engineering management graduate program, an honor that has been bestowed upon the university many times.
“This is a highly competitive category, in which S&T prevailed against an impressive group of programs from universities across the country,” says Enke. “This competition is becoming more challenging because so many programs are realizing the importance of distinguishing ourselves among our peer institutions.”
To enter, programs submit current statistics including number of publications, grant totals, graduation rates and curriculum. This year’s winning application was assembled by Dr. Steven Corns, associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering.
A team of EMSE students and faculty were also honored at ASEM.
Ashley-Ann Davis, a doctoral student from Jefferson City, Mo., Dr. Suzanna Long, a member of the S&T faculty from 2008-2021, and Dr. Casey Canfield, assistant professor of engineering management and systems engineering, won the Merritt Williamson Award for best international annual conference paper, “Key Factors for Energy Portfolio Transitions in Island Nations.” Davis is pursuing her Ph.D. through the Kummer Innovation and Entrepreneurs Fellows Program.
