Missouri S&T Chancellor Mo Dehghani and the Missouri S&T India Association are sponsoring a “Walk for India” to raise funds to support India’s efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6, on the S&T campus. The drop-in event will begin near the Havener Center patio, and upon providing their donations, participants will walk a short route through campus to show support for India.

Students, faculty, staff and the public are invited to join the walk at any time between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.. All participants will be required to wear facial coverings and practice social distancing, in accordance with Missouri S&T’s COVID-19 safety protocol.

A minimum contribution of $5 is suggested, but participants may contribute any amount they wish. In-person donations may be in the form of cash, checks, or credit or debit cards. Those unable to attend but still wishing to contribute may donate online by going to give.mst.edu and selecting “Walk for India” under the “Initiatives” section of the drop-down menu.

The walk route will begin near the Havener Center’s east lawn and will proceed east to Curtis Laws Wilson Library. Past the library, participants will turn right and proceed south to 11th Street, then turn right to walk west past Schrenk Hall and the Chancellor’s Residence to State Street. From there, participants will turn right to return to the Havener Center.

Anyone wishing to volunteer to help with this event should contact Melanie Keeney, director of engagement and outreach at Missouri S&T, at mkeeney@mst.edu by 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 5.

The impact of COVID-19 in India has worsened dramatically in recent weeks, with more than 19 million reported cases and over 215,000 confirmed deaths. India has specifically requested certain high-priority resources, including oxygen concentrators and ventilators, therapeutics, PPE, and testing supplies.

All funds raised through the “Walk for India” event will be donated to the non-profit organization Association for India’s Development (aidindia.org).
