Nearly 180 Missouri S&T students returned to campus for the spring semester a day early on Monday, January 16, to work on service projects at 13 organizations around the Rolla community as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. They cleaned exercise equipment, cooked meals, hung shelves, painted and more. Here’s a look at some of the students in action. The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is sponsored by the Missouri S&T student life department.
WomanSpace is a women’s community center that serves as a hub for women- or family-centered activities, businesses or organizations.
Dr. David Westenberg, associate professor and interim chair of biological sciences, helps S&T students clean and organize WomanSpace’s shared kitchen.
An S&T student paints tree rings on a concrete floor for what will become an environmental installation at Kaleidoscope Discovery Center, an interactive science center for Rolla area-children.
Missouri S&T students decorate lunch sacks for Rolla’s Meals on Wheels program, which delivers food to local senior citizens.
Artistic S&T students wrote and decorated cards with notes of encouragement for women who were recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
At the end of the day, S&T students who participated in the MLK Jr. Day of Service reflected on what they could do to make the world a better place.
Reading all these services our students engaged in makes me proud of them and our community and university ties. Learning what community means is a lifelong enrichment for everyone.
