The Rolla fire chief and Missouri University of Science and Technology representatives will hold a press conference at 5 p.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 8) outside Emerson Hall, located near the corner of 16th and Pine streets in Rolla. The conference will provide details of today’s fire on campus and answer any questions media may have.

Due to an air conditioning unit catching fire on the roof of Emerson Hall at Missouri S&T, university officials enacted the campus emergency mass notification system to evacuate faculty, staff and students from the building today. The fire was contained by Rolla Fire and Rescue. No injuries have been reported.

Classes in all other buildings continue as scheduled.

As it happened:

At approximately 12:55 p.m., a mass notification message warned people that a fire was being combated by local emergency personnel.

At approximately 1:15 p.m., the following buildings surrounding Emerson Hall had power shut off as a precaution:

  • Stramanis-James Hall
  • Fulton Hall
  • Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall
  • Physics Building
  • Nuclear Reactor
  • Interdisciplinary Building
  • Parker Hall
  • Norwood Hall

At approximately 2:30 p.m., power was restored to these buildings.

First responders searched Emerson Hall and are now cleaning up and inspecting the area. Business is resuming as normal for all campus facilities except Emerson Hall.
