Missouri S&T’s summer camps will instill excitement in youth

2009 07 29 Aerospace camp edit file 100Missouri University of Science and Technology will host 17 camps this summer that offer students of all ages hands-on learning experiences. They can learn about explosives, make a microsatellite, hone their leadership skills and learn what it takes to have a career in science, technology, engineering or math.

Grade requirements indicated in the following camps are for the grade students will enter in fall 2015:

• Aerospace Camp — Students age 10-13 spend three days on the S&T campus to delve into the world of space flight and aeronautics. This camp will be held July 14-16.

• Building Leaders for Tomorrow — This five-day program helps high school freshman, sophomores and juniors unlock the power of communication and hone their leadership skills. This camp will be held June 21-25.

• Camp Invention — This day camp for students entering first through sixth grade offers hands-on activities to encourage a passion for learning. This camp will be held July 6-10.

• CyberMiner Camp — High school juniors and seniors will unleash their cyber-self at this five-day camp. Students will learn about software design, programming and other digital technologies. This camp will be held June 14-18.

• EcoGirl — Girls entering their junior or senior year in high school are invited to participate in this five-day camp to explore careers in environmental fields. This camp will be held July 13-17.

• Explosives Camp — Rising high school juniors and seniors, age 16 and older, can attend this one-of-a-kind camp. Students must apply for admission to this camp. Two sessions are offered: June 14-19 and June 21-26.

• Formula SAE Electric Car Camp — High school sophomores, juniors and seniors will design and model an Electric Formula SAE car at this five-day camp. This camp will be held July 19-23.

• It’s A Girl Thing — Girls entering seventh or eighth grades are invited to attend this five-day camp to explore STEM careers through group projects and design competitions. This camp will be held June 1-5.

• Jackling Introduction to Engineering — Rising high school juniors and seniors will find out what engineers do and their impact on the world at this five-day camp. Three sessions are available: June 7-11, June 21-25 and July 5-9.

• Materials Camp — High school juniors and seniors learn how engineers and scientists turn materials into useful products at this six-day camp. Students must apply for admission to this camp. This camp will be held July 19-24.

• Minority Introduction to Technology and Engineering — High school juniors and seniors find out what engineers actually do, their impact on the world and how math and science relate to engineering at this six-day camp designed specifically for underrepresented minorities. Students must apply for acceptance into this camp. Two sessions are available: May 31-June 5 and June 14-19.

• Nuclear Engineering Camp — High school juniors and seniors spend six days exploring the power of the atom and learning about career opportunities in nuclear engineering. This camp will be held June 14-19.

• Robotics Camp — Students age 12-15 will design their own robot and learn programming techniques at this three-day hands-on camp. This camp will be held June 3-5.

• Space: The Final Frontier — Rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors will learn hands-on how engineers design and build satellites, then launch a microsatellite 100,000 feet in the air. This camp will be held July 19-23.

• Sports Camps — S&T coaches and players will lead camps in a variety of sports. Visit minercamps.com for a complete schedule of these activities.

• Summer Research Academy — Rising high school seniors or graduating seniors will work side-by-side with experts to conduct research in their favorite field. Students must apply for admission to the Summer Research Academy. The academy is held June 7-July 17.

• Summer Solutions for Girls — Girls entering their freshman or sophomore year will discover the possibilities of college life as well as careers in engineering and science at this five-day camp. This camp will be held June 15-19.

Campers attending overnight sessions stay in Missouri S&T residence halls. Sessions fill quickly, so check for space availability, camp fees, enrollment deadlines and registration forms online at summer.mst.edu.
