On Thursday, March 7, 11 undergraduates from Missouri University of Science and Technology will head approximately 60 miles north to Jefferson City, Mo., to exhibit their latest research projects to the state’s legislators.

These students will be participating in the annual Undergraduate Research Day at the Capital, an event that welcomes undergraduates from all four campuses in the University of Missouri System. The students have been working on their research projects under the direction of faculty mentors. The purpose of Undergraduate Research Day at the Capital is to inform Missouri’s lawmakers about research that is occurring at Missouri universities.

Missouri S&T places an emphasis on providing research opportunities to undergraduate students. The following students will appear in Jefferson City to represent Missouri S&T:

Michael Acton, a senior in nuclear engineering from St. Louis–“Development of Neutron and X-Ray Combined Computed Tomography for Non-Destructive Testing and Homeland Security,” directed by Dr. Hyoung Koo Lee, associate professor of nuclear engineering at S&T.

Andrew Bromet, a senior in biological sciences from Union, Mo.–“Biological Communities in an Intermittent Stream in Phelps County,” directed by Dr. Dev Niyogi, associate professor of biological sciences at S&T.

Casey Burton, a senior in chemistry from Kaiser, Mo.–“Enhancement of Amylase Activity By Enzymatic Immobilization On Polymer Matrices,” directed by Dr. Yinfa Ma, Curators’ Teaching Professor of chemistry at S&T.

Ariel Donovan, a senior in chemistry from Rolla, Mo.–“Removal of Water Contaminants by Using Agricultural Byproducts,” directed by Dr. Honglan Shi, associate research professor of chemistry at S&T.

Jacob Goldsmith, a senior in psychological science from Cape Girardeau, Mo.–“The Effectiveness of an Online Plagiarism Intervention Module,” directed by Dr. Amber Henslee, assistant professor of psychological science at S&T.

Sarah Hatfield, a senior in electrical engineering from Beaufort, Mo.–“Microwave Detection and Evaluation of Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) Gel,” directed by Dr. Kristen Donnell, assistant professor of electrical engineering at S&T.

Samantha Kempker, a senior in psychological science from Jefferson City, Mo.–“Evaluating the Acceptability of GAMMA (Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol) Among Greek-Affiliated Students,” directed by Dr. Amber Henslee, assistant professor of psychological science at S&T.

Kate Menke, a sophomore in biological sciences from Berger, Mo.–“Biological Communities in an Intermittent Stream in Phelps County,” directed by Dr. Dev Niyogi, associate professor of biological sciences at S&T.

Megan Schuller, a senior in chemistry from St. Peters, Mo.–“Early Breast Cancer Detection by Quantitative Determination of Lactoferrin as a Biomarker in Urine Samples Using Capillary Electrophoresis,” directed by Dr. Yinfa Ma, Curators’ Teaching Professor of chemistry at S&T.

John Volosin, a senior in information science and technology from Rolla, Mo.–“Measuring Impact of a Banking and Insurance Performance Dashboard,” directed by Dr. Bih-Ru Lea, associate professor of business and information technology at S&T.

Darrell Wallace, a senior in civil engineering from Lee’s Summit, Mo.–“Validating Smart Phone Apps to Improve Wellness in Missouri and India,” directed by Dr. Daniel Oerther, John A. and Susan Mathes Professor of environmental engineering at S&T.
