The 55th Annual Meeting of the Midwest Junto for the History of Science will be held on the Missouri University of Science and Technology campus March 23-25. This is the first time the junto has been held at Missouri S&T.

“We have 25 scholars coming in from several regional universities like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma, presenting papers on everything from Descartes to Steampunk,” says Dr. Jeff Schramm, associate professor of history and political science and president of the Midwest Junto for the History of Science.

Formed over 50 years ago, the Midwest Junto provides a professional forum for those in the middle of North America who are interested in the history of science, technology, and medicine, to meet, exchange ideas and present papers.

Sessions featured in this year’s junto include early astronomy, modern medicine, nineteenth-century science and Descartes and the Mechanistic World.

The junto begins with a welcome reception at 6 p.m. Friday, March 23, at the Public House, 600 N. Rolla St. in Rolla. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, March 24, in Room 212 Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall.

At 8:45 a.m., Dr. Robert Schwartz, interim provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs will give the opening address, then various sessions on the history of science and technology will follow throughout the day.

At 6 p.m., a banquet and the Stuart Pierson Memorial Lecture will be held in the McNutt Hall Commons. Dr. Marilyn Baily Ogilvie, professor emerita from the University of Oklahoma, will speak on “A Passion for Research: Margaret Morse Nice, Her Life and Work.”

Sessions will begin again at 9 a.m. Sunday, March 25, in Room 121 Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall and will continue through the close of the junto at 11:10 a.m.

This year’s junto meeting is partially sponsored by the Missouri S&T history and political science department and the provost’s office. For more information, contact Schramm at schrammj@mst.edu.
