Three Missouri University of Science and Technology students were taken into custody by University Police in connection with two minor explosions that occurred outside the Quadrangle residence hall complex on the S&T campus this afternoon (Friday, Feb. 17, 2012). No charges have been filed.

At 1:24 p.m., the Rolla Police Department received a report of an explosion in a Dumpster on the east side of Farrar Hall in the Missouri S&T Quadrangle. Initial reports indicate that six individuals were involved.

The Rolla Police Department, Missouri S&T Police Department and City of Rolla Fire and Rescue reported to the scene. A small homemade explosive device was found to have caused the explosion in the Dumpster. Witness reports suggest a similar minor explosion occurred earlier near the Quad’s outdoor volleyball courts.

According to S&T Police Chief Christine Laughlin, each explosion was similar in magnitude to that of a cherry bomb.
No injuries were reported and property damage was minimal. Officers were still on the scene securing evidence Friday afternoon.

Anyone with any information about this ongoing investigation should call the Missouri S&T Police Department at 573-341-4300.
