Dr. Lampo Leong, professor of art at the University of Missouri-Columbia, has been named the 2012 Maxwell C. Weiner Distinguished Professor of Humanities at Missouri University of Science and Technology.
An acclaimed painter, calligrapher and multimedia artist, Leong has served as juror for more than 30 art competitions, including public art projects, grants, and exhibitions for the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Missouri Arts Council. His works have been featured in more than 60 solo and 340 group exhibitions internationally and are found in 15 museums and hundreds of corporate and private collections, including the Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Museu de Arte de Macau and Guangdong Museum of Art. His works have received more than 50 awards.
During his time in Rolla, Leong will teach a course and two workshops on Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. He will also hold a public lecture on his award-winning abstract oil painting, which incorporates wild cursive Chinese calligraphy with images from outer space and the microcosmic world. Two of his animated films and a video of a San Francisco performance will be shown as part of Missouri S&T’s Spring 2012 Free Film Series.
Former chair of the UMC art department, Leong earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in brush painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in China, a master of fine arts degree in painting from the California College of the Arts, and a Ph.D. in art theory and practice from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Missouri S&T’s Maxwell C. Weiner Distinguished Professorship in Humanities, established by an estate gift to the university in 1999, is rotated among the arts, languages and philosophy department, the English and technical communication department, and the history and political science department. During his semester at S&T, Leong will be a member of the arts, languages and philosophy department.
Weiner graduated from Missouri S&T when it was known as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. He also studied at the University of Hawaii and at Washington University in St. Louis. He retired from Westinghouse Electric Corp.
