“Impressions of the Civil War in Missouri,” an exhibit with paintings and sketches by artist Dan Woodward, will open with a reception from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, in the lobby of Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall, 10th and Main streets in Rolla, Mo. The exhibit is sponsored by the Missouri University of Science and Technology Campus Art Committee.

“As a Missouri native, I take pleasure in recording the quickly vanishing world of natural wilderness and historical identity that surrounds us in our unique state,” says Woodward. “I feel strongly that artists have a responsibility to keep the past alive by preserving the important memories and icons of civilization.”

Woodward says the exhibit follows events that occurred in the early years of the Civil War in Missouri that began 151 years ago. “Actual locations and scenes were adhered to as faithfully as possible, including several reenactments of battles and camp life. Civil War reenactors Will Tollerton of Columbia and John Petersen of Rolla provided invaluable advice on correct period dress and deportment and, along with Stephen Schrock of Rolla, portrayed young soldiers in several of the paintings.”

The show will be on display in Castleman Hall through May 15.
