S&T presents awards during Homecoming

Seventeen people with ties to Missouri University of Science and Technology were honored during the Miner Alumni Association’s Awards Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Missouri S&T. The awards banquet is held in conjunction with Missouri S&T’s Homecoming celebration.


Award recipients include:

Alumni Achievement Award – Kenneth Cage earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1963 and a master’s degree in nuclear engineering in 1966 from Missouri S&T. Cage is an attorney at McDermott, Will & Emery.

Alumni Achievement Award – John Gibson earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering management from Missouri S&T in 1974. Gibson is chair, president and CEO of Oneok Inc.

Alumni Achievement Award – Roger Truitt earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1971. Truitt is retired president of Arco Products.

Alumni Merit Award – Michael Bytnar earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1968 and a master’s degree in engineering management in 1973 from Missouri S&T. Bytnar is retired president of Nooter Corp.

Alumni Merit Award – Richard Straeter earned a bachelor of science degree in petroleum engineering from Missouri S&T in 1983. Straeter is vice president of Continental Resources Inc., eastern region.

Robert V. Wolf Outstanding Alumni Service Award – Michael D. Hurst earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Missouri S&T in 1974. Hurst is retired president and chief operating officer of McCarthy Building.

Distinguished Young Alumni Award — Jane Diecker earned a bachelor of science degree in nuclear engineering from Missouri S&T in 2003. Diecker is an attorney for Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP.

Distinguished Young Alumni Award – Lister Florence earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1995, a master’s degree in information science and technology in 2006 and a bachelor’s degree in computer science in 2007 from Missouri S&T. Florence is an information technology specialist for the U.S. Geological Survey.

Distinguished Young Alumni Award – James R. Friend earned a bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering in 1992 and master’s (1994) and Ph.D. (1998) degrees in mechanical engineering from Missouri S&T. Friend is an associate dean and professor at Monash University in Australia.

Distinguished Young Alumni Award – Natalie Vanderspiegel earned bachelor’s (2002) and master’s (2004) degrees in ceramic engineering and a master’s degree (2004) in engineering management from Missouri S&T. Vanderspiegel is a senior manufacturing engineer for Solar Turbines Inc.

Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Randall Lewis is an instructional lab coordinator for mechanical and aerospace engineering at Missouri S&T.

Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Douglas Ludlow is a professor of chemical and biological engineering at Missouri S&T.

Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Joseph Jackson is a coordinator for residential life at Missouri S&T.

Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Jeffery Volz is an assistant professor for civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri S&T.

Frank H. Mackaman Alumni Volunteer Service Award – James Foil earned bachelor’s (1974) and master’s (1975) degrees in civil engineering from Missouri S&T. Foil is the senior vice president and general manager for Burns & McDonnell.

Alumni Ambassadors Award – Dave Bufalo earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Missouri S&T in 1966. Bufalo is retired director of the design and construction management division in public works for the city of Denver and county.

Class of 1942 Teaching Excellence Award – Eric Bryan is an assistant professor of English and technical communication at Missouri S&T.
