The fall 2011 enrollment census at Missouri University of Science and Technology, officially recorded at the end of the semester’s fourth week, shows the highest enrollment in nearly 30 years.

This year’s enrollment is 7,522 students, up 316 students from the official fall 2010 figure, says Laura Stoll, interim vice provost and dean of enrollment management.

Much of the growth has come from Missouri S&T’s distance education programs, which have increased enrollment by more than 25 percent, from 686 students to 863. On-campus enrollment has increased slightly more than 2 percent.

Record numbers of women are also coming to the university. “Total female enrollment is at 1,685 students, up 4.7 percent over the record of 1,610,” says Stoll. Female enrollment is typically low at engineering-dominant schools.

Fall classes at Missouri S&T began on Aug. 22.
