A national touring company of deaf and hearing actors will tell the story of “Winnie the Pooh” in spoken English and American Sign Language at Missouri University of Science and Technology this month.

The group from Sign Stage on Tour will perform at 6 p.m. Friday, May 13, in Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall, 10th and Main streets in Rolla, Mo. This is the final performance in this season’s Leach Theatre Family Series.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and youth. Tickets are available online or from the Leach Theatre Box Office. Box office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 573-341-4219 for more information.

Join Christopher Robin, his best friend Pooh, and the whole animal crew for this delightful, eye-opening adventure. Follow Pooh and Piglet on a Heffalump hunt, watch Rabbit scheme to rid the forest of Kanga’s dreaded bathtub, and help Eeyore search for his tail. Along the way you just might pick up a few lessons in friendship, loyalty and acceptance. The play is based on the original story by A.A. Milne.

In its 15th year, Sign Stage on Tour specializes in sign language theater, where deaf and hearing actors perform together on stage. Whenever a character speaks, the character speaking uses sign language, but the audience also hears the voice. The voice comes from a different actor speaking through a microphone, sometimes on-stage and sometimes off-stage. Visually, the stage is filled with the movement of hands and bodies yet every word is spoken to make sure all audience members, both deaf and hearing, don’t miss a thing.

The Leach Family Series offers discounts for purchases of four or more tickets to this performance. In addition, in the event that tickets remain, discounted tickets will be offered through the theater’s “Back Row Club.” The seats in the last row of the theater will be sold one hour before each event for $10 each.

Leach Theatre Family Series events are supported in part by the Missouri Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Mid-America Arts Alliance.

Leach Theatre is a division of Missouri S&T’s student affairs department. For more information about the series, call the Leach Theatre Box Office at 573-341-4219.
