S&T students to share research results with lawmakers

On March 3, 31 undergraduates from Missouri University of Science and Technology will travel to Jefferson City, Mo., to share research results with state lawmakers.


Selected students from all four campuses in the University of Missouri system participate in Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol, which is an annual event. The undergraduates have been working individually or in groups on research that is directed by faculty mentors. The purpose of Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol is to inform lawmakers about research that is occurring at Missouri universities.

Missouri S&T places an emphasis on providing research opportunities to undergraduate students. The following S&T students are going to Jefferson City:

Peter Albano, a senior in computer engineering from Crystal City, Mo. — “Automatic Detection of Pink Areas in Malignant Melanoma,” directed by Dr. William Stoecker, assistant professor of computer science at S&T.

Rachel Bartz, a junior in environmental engineering from Kirkwood, Mo. — “Effect of Groundwater Depth on Aerobic Biodegradation of BTEX Using In-Planta Measurements,” directed by Dr. Joel Burken, professor of environmental engineering at S&T.

Kenneth Bassler, a senior in electrical engineering from Belleville, Ill. — “Automatic Detection of Cloudy Milia-Like Cysts,” directed by Dr. Bijaya Shrestha, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at S&T.

Casey Burton, a sophomore in chemistry from Kaiser, Mo. — “A Fluorescent Urine Probe for Prostate Cancer,” directed by Dr. Yinfa Ma, Curators’ Teaching Professor of chemistry at S&T.

Ashley Byerley, a senior in geology and geophysics from Lonedell, Mo. — “Characterization of Folds in the Roubidoux Formation Near Licking, Mo.,” directed by Dr. John Hogan, associate professor of geological sciences and engineering at S&T.

Brice Curtin, a junior in chemistry from St. Louis — “Aerogels as Drug Delivery Systems,” directed by Dr. Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, professor of chemistry at S&T.

Jamal Dillahunt, a senior in civil engineering from Brooklyn, N.Y. — “Developing Models to Improve Energy Efficient Design in Residential Homes,” directed by Dr. Stuart Baur, assistant professor of architectural engineering at S&T.

Joshua Erickson, a senior in biological sciences from Blue Springs, Mo. — “Disruption of Muscarinic Receptor Mediated Signal Transduction by Oxidative Stress,” directed by Dr. Robert Aronstam, professor of biological sciences at S&T.

Eric Farrow, a senior in environmental engineering from Rolla — “Arsenic in Rice Plants: Understanding Mobility and Decreasing as Uptake,” directed by Dr. Joel Burken, professor of environmental engineering, and Dr. Jianmin Wang, associate professor of environmental engineering at S&T.

Jason Hagerty, a senior in computer engineering from Waynesville, Mo. — “Automatic Detection of Cloudy Milia-Like Cysts,” directed by Dr. Bijaya Shrestha, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at S&T.
