Missouri S&T to present awards during Homecoming banquet

Seventeen people with ties to Missouri University of Science and Technology will be honored during the Miner Alumni Association’s Awards Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 2, at Missouri S&T. The awards banquet is held in conjunction with Missouri S&T’s Homecoming celebration.


The public is invited to the awards banquet, which will be held in St. Pat’s Ballroom of the Havener Center. The event begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are required. For more information, contact the Miner Alumni Association at 573-341-7677.

Award recipients include:

Alumni Achievement Award – Dean Lindstrom earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1979. Lindstrom is president of Novar, a Honeywell company.

Alumni Achievement Award – Elizabeth Parry earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering management from Missouri S&T in 1983. Parry coordinates science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) development for the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University.

Alumni Achievement Award – Steve Sullivan earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1989. Sullivan is director of research and development for Industrial Light and Magic.

Robert V. Wolf Alumni Service Award – William Oberbeck Sr. earned a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1939. Oberbeck is a retired business owner and engineer.

Robert V. Wolf Alumni Service Award – William Oberbeck Jr. earned a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering (1972), a master’s degree in engineering management (1976) and a master’s degree in nuclear engineering (1976) from Missouri S&T. Oberbeck is president of control products and vice president of Advance Valve.

Robert V. Wolf Alumni Service Award – Jon Carl Schneider earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Missouri S&T in 1987. Schneider is director of technical and professional development for The Boeing Co.

Distinguished Young Alumni Award – Ryan Howell earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1997 and a Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering from Missouri S&T in 2009. Howell is a major in the U.S. Army.

Distinguished Young Alumni Award – Jeffrey Vesley Rooks earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1995. Rooks is vice president of quality excellence at the Freedom Group.

Distinguished Young Alumni Award – Patricia Spence earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering management (1994) and a master’s degree in information science and technology (2005) from Missouri S&T. Spence is a Ph.D. candidate in information sciences and technology at Pennsylvania State University.

Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Matt Buechler earned bachelor’s (2003) and master’s (2005) degrees in computer science from Missouri S&T. Buechler is a lecturer in computer science at S&T.

Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Ronaldo Luna is geotechnical group coordinator and associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri S&T.

Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Kimberly Henthorn was promoted to associate professor of chemical and biological engineering at Missouri S&T in 2010.

Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Stephen Raper earned bachelor’s (1985) and master’s (1987) degrees in engineering management from Missouri S&T. He also earned a Ph.D. in engineering management from S&T in 1989. Raper is an associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering at S&T.

Frank H. Mackaman Alumni Volunteer Service Award – Richard Berning earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Missouri S&T in 1969. Berning is the retired director of public works for Springfield, Ill.

Alumni Merit Award – Hansraj Patel earned bachelor’s (1964) and master’s (1965) degrees in petroleum engineering from Missouri S&T. Patel is an entrepreneur in the oil and gas industry.

Class of 1942 Teaching Excellence Award – Lesley Sneed recently completed her second year as an assistant professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri S&T.

Honorary Life Member – John F. Carney III is chancellor of Missouri S&T.
