Silent surrealist films will be accompanied by live gypsy jazz when Hot Club of San Francisco presents “Silent Surrealism,” on Tuesday, Sept. 28, in Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall, 10th and Main streets in Rolla, Mo.

Missouri University of Science and Technology is bringing the group to Rolla as a Leach Theatre Special Event. The performance will be held at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $15 and $10 for Missouri S&T students. S&T students can charge tickets to their student accounts. Tickets are available online or from the Leach Theatre Box Office. Box office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 573-341-4219 for more information.

During “Silent Surrealism,” Hot Club of San Francisco accompanies silent surrealist films with the distinctive music made famous by Stephane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club de France. The group borrows the all-string instrumentation of violin, bass and guitars from the original Hot Club, but adds their own innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s lead guitarist, Paul Mehling. The performance transports audiences back to the small, smoky jazz clubs of 1930s Paris and the refined lounges of the famous Hotel Ritz.

A Parisian coffee house reception will follow the performance.

The group’s appearance is supported in part by public radio KMST and Missouri S&T’s Free Film Series.

In the event that tickets remain for the performance, Leach Theatre will also offer discounts through its “Back Row Club.” The seats in the last row of the theater will be sold one hour before each event for $10 each.
