Second student dies from injuries sustained in traffic accident

A second Missouri S&T student has died as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident Friday, Oct. 10, in Rolla.

Joshua C. Roach, 23, a senior in business and management systems from Kansas City, Mo., was pronounced dead around 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at University Hospital in Columbia, Mo.

Roach and another student, Derek A. Medlock, 24, were involved in a one-vehicle accident that occurred at 12:36 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in the 500 block of Forum Drive in Rolla. According to Missouri S&T University Police, Roach and Medlock were traveling in a vehicle that was southbound on Forum Drive. The vehicle missed a curve in the road, left the roadway and overturned, coming to rest in a ditch. The driver of the vehicle has not been determined. Both passengers were ejected from the vehicle.

Medlock, a senior in civil engineering at Missouri S&T and a student-assistant coach for the men’s soccer team, was pronounced dead at the scene. Roach, a former soccer player for Missouri S&T, was taken to Phelps County Regional Medical Center with serious injuries and later airlifted to University Hospital.

Officers from Missouri S&T University Police, the Rolla Police Department and Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to the scene. The accident is under investigation by the Rolla Police Department.
