Missouri S&T to present awards during Homecoming banquet

Seventeen people with ties to Missouri University of Science and Technology will be honored during the Miner Alumni Association’s Awards Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Missouri S&T. The awards banquet is held in conjunction with Missouri S&T’s Homecoming celebration.

The general public is invited to the awards banquet, which will be held in St. Pat’s Ballroom A-B of the Havener Center. The event begins with a social hour at 5:45 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are required. For more information, contact the Miner Alumni Association at 573-341-7677.

Award recipients include:

Alumni Achievement Award – Paul Stricker earned a bachelor of science degree in life sciences from Missouri S&T in 1982. Stricker is president of Youth Sports Awareness Enterprise in San Diego, Calif.
Robert V. Wolf Alumni Service Award – K. Daniel Hinkle earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering management from Missouri S&T in 1973. Hinkle is a contract lobbyist in Sugar Land, Texas.
Robert V. Wolf Alumni Service Award – Dr. Wayne Huebner earned a bachelor of science degree in ceramic engineering from Missouri S&T in 1982 and a Ph.D. in ceramic engineering in 1987. Huebner is a professor of ceramic engineering and chair of materials science and engineering at Missouri S&T.
Alumni Merit Award – Cheryl Walker earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1986. Walker is president and general counsel of Obasi Enterprises in St. Louis and is chair of the University of Missouri Board of Directors.
Alumni Merit Award – Robert Whites is the retired director of student financial Assistance at Missouri S&T.
Alumni Merit Award – Ralph Wolfram earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1950. Wolfram is a retired director of Bank Building and Equipment Corp. in St. Louis and president of Wolfram & Associates in Lake St. Louis, Mo.
Distinguished Young Alumni Award – William Allen Jr. earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1997. Allen is a senior resident brewmaster at the Merrimack Brewery in Bedford, N.H.
Distinguished Young Alumnus Award – Francisco Perez-Sandi earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Missouri S&T in 2000. Perez-Sandi is operations manager for Caterpillar in Coahuila, Mexico.
Distinguished Young Alumnus Award – Esther Kwabea Walker earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1994. Walker is a sales support manager for Pepsi Americas, St. Louis Bottling.
Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Dr. Ralph Flori is an associate professor of petroleum engineering at Missouri S&T. Dr. Flori earned three degrees from Missouri S&T. Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Dr. Anne Maglia is an associate professor of biological sciences at Missouri S&T.
Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Dr. Jeffrey Smith is an associate professor of ceramic engineering at Missouri S&T.
Outstanding Student Advisor Award – Dr. Richard Stephenson is a professor of civil engineering at Missouri S&T.
Frank H. Mackaman Alumni Volunteer Service Award – Stephen Wright earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1968 and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering design in 1970. Wright is a supervisory engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Seattle.
Class of 1942 Excellence in Teaching Award – Michael Bruening is an assistant professor of history and political science at Missouri S&T.
Joe Mooney Distinguished Student Award – Taylor Hahn is a senior at Missouri S&T majoring in biological sciences.
Alumni Admissions Ambassador of the Year Award – Robert Morrison Jr. earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering management from Missouri S&T in 1971. Morrison is president and owner of The ROMOR Company in Naperville, Ill.

Descriptions of the awards are as follows:

The Alumni Achievement Award is presented in recognition of outstanding personal achievements by alumni in fields of academia, business, professions or civic endeavors.
The Robert V. Wolf Alumni Service Award is presented in memory of Robert V. Wolf, one of Missouri S&T’s most dedicated alumni. It recognizes service by alumni and friends to the university and the Miner Alumni Association.
The Alumni Merit Award is presented to faculty, friends of the campus, or alumni for outstanding achievement or service to the campus or the Miner Alumni Association.
The Distinguished Young Alumni Award is presented to alumni 40 years of age or younger who have demonstrated leadership ability, commitment to the service of others, and a high level of achievement in his or her chosen career or profession.
The Outstanding Student Advisor Award honors four current advisors and recognizes their efforts in assisting students with academic and career decisions.
The Frank H. Mackaman Alumni Volunteer Service Award honors an alumnus/alumna in recognition of his or her volunteer service to the Miner Alumni Association, the community and the alumni sections.
The Class of 1942 Excellence in Teaching Award is presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in effective teaching efforts. The award is based upon student feedback surveys.
The Joe Mooney Distinguished Student Award is presented in memory of Joseph W. Mooney, a past president of the Miner Alumni Association Board of Directors. It is presented to an outstanding officer of a student organization.
The Alumni Admissions Ambassador of the Year Award honors the Alumni Admissions Ambassador who has made significant contributions to the university through a combination of dedication to the university and desire to actively recruit future students.
