UMR interdisciplinary engineering department to get new chair

Dr. Bonnie Bachman, a senior director at Flextronics International, will
become the new chair of the interdisciplinary engineering department at the
University of Missouri-Rolla effective Dec. 20. Dr. Ralph E. Flori, associate
professor of interdisciplinary engineering, is serving as interim chair until
Bachman arrives. Flori succeeds Dr. Ron Fannin, who has retired.

Bachman holds a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Rutgers
University. She also earned a master’s degree in mechanics and materials
science from Rutgers University and a bachelor’s degree in physics from
Benedictine University.

Prior to joining Flextronics International in 2006, Bachman worked for six
years for Motorola Inc., first as director of mechanical engineering in the
product development engineering department and later as director of the
emerging technology department. She has also worked for Lexmark, Hauser
Chemical Research, EMPAK, the Solar Energy Research Institute and AT&T Bell
Laboratories.

Bachman’s academic background includes creating the undergraduate program in
polymer science and engineering for the University of Wisconsin-Stout as well
as serving as a certified instructor for Broward County Adult Education.

Bachman is the author of two book chapters and approximately 30 journal and
conference articles. She also holds four U.S. patents, one European patent and
one World patent.

Bachman is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Society of
Mechanical Engineers, Creative Education Foundation, Industrial Research
Institute, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Materials Research
Society, the Plastics Academy, Product Development and Management Association,
Society of Plastics Engineers, Industrial Designers Society of America and
Sigma Xi.
