The University of Missouri-Rolla Symphony Band and Symphonic Winds will host a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in Leach Theatre of UMR’s Castleman Hall, 10th and Main streets in Rolla.

The performance is free for students and youths under the age of 18. Tickets are $3 for the general public and are available at the door and at the Leach Theatre Box Office.

The Symphonic Winds, an audition-only ensemble, will perform “Moonlit Chandeliers,” an original composition by Derek Limback, director of the UMR Jazz Band and director of instrumental music for St. James schools.

Limback says his inspiration for the piece came from the severe ice storm that swept across Missouri earlier this year.

“It’s the sonic description of what I saw at 3 a.m.,” Limback explains. “Moonlight sparkled on the icy trees, which swayed and crackled in the light breeze. I’m looking forward to hearing its premier.”

The Symphony Band, composed of UMR students and members of the Rolla community, will perform music of Dmitri Shostakovich and Dello Joio. The group will also feature a marimba solo by local educator Carol Helbel. The piece was written by her husband, Raymond, and was recently premiered by the Lebanon High School Symphony Band.

“We’re excited to have her on campus to perform this composition and to feature her as a soloist,” says Dr. Donald Miller, conductor of the groups and assistant professor of music at UMR.
