Representatives from Caterpillar Inc. will be on the University of Missouri-Rolla campus Tuesday, Sept. 5-Thursday, Sept. 7, to allow students to explore leadership practices, career opportunities and life in the corporate world of a Fortune 100 company.

During the week CAT representatives and UMR alumni will meet with students about how to shape their future and how the company may fit in to their career goals. The event will culminate with an equipment and career display at the Havener Center on Thursday, Sept. 7.

Alumni will share first-hand accounts of their experiences with CAT from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the atrium of the Havener Center.

A variety of presentations will be offered throughout the event, including discussions on leadership, corporate ethics, marketing your skills, applying your major, employer expectations, skills to succeed and a day in the life of an engineer.

Mike Render, director of engine design for CAT’s large power systems division and a former UMR student, will present a keynote speech titled “ACERT Technologies” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, in the St. Pat’s Ballroom of the Havener Center. Seating will begin at 3:30 p.m. Render joined CAT in 1973.

Render will highlight several aspects of ACERT including: the development of new and emerging technologies, collaboration between disciplines, and business strategies CAT used to develop this technology. The presentation will include information about strategies to meet emissions level requirements, including hydraulics, after-treatments (for future emissions levels) and technology strategy, and will show the relationship with UMR majors in engineering, materials science and business.

More than big yellow iron, Caterpillar offers career opportunities in a variety of areas as well as the ability to shape its employees’ career paths their interests develop.
