The City of Rolla honored retiring UMR Chancellor Gary Thomas "for his contributions to improving UMR and Rolla" with a red maple tree on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005.

Rolla Mayor Joe Morgan, Ward 6 City Councilwoman Charlotte Wiggins and other community and university representatives were on hand to help Thomas turn the dirt on the maple tree on campus near 12th and Pine streets. The maple was donated to UMR by the city.

Thomas, who has served as UMR chancellor since September 2000, is retiring from the position on Aug. 31, 2005.

Helping Thomas plant the tree were Wiggins, Bill Marshall of Phelps County Bank and Rolla City Administrator John Butz.
