The University of Missouri-Rolla is hosting a week-long orientation for new freshmen, Opening Week 2005, Aug. 13-20.
More than 900 freshmen are expected to take part in activities ranging from academic workshops to field trips. New students begin to move into residence halls on Saturday, Aug. 13. Classes start on Monday, Aug. 22.
One of the highlights of Opening Week is the Project X Competition. Teams of 15-18 students design radio-controlled cars and compete for prizes. On Friday, Aug. 19, the teams will race their cars through campus.
A schedule of selected Opening Week events on campus is as follows:
Saturday, Aug. 13 – New student move-in, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; freshman ice cream social, 7-8 p.m. at the Thomas Jefferson Residence Hall swimming pool.
Sunday, Aug. 14 – Fireworks display on campus, 9:30 p.m.
Monday, Aug. 15 – New student registration, 7:30-9 a.m. at 103 Parker Hall; convocation, 9-10:30 a.m. at the GaleBullman Multi-Purpose Building; academic workshops (Trigonometry Review, Problem Solving, Safety Lab, Communications and Leadership), 12:30-3:30 p.m. at various locations.
Tuesday, Aug. 16 – Academic workshops continue from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and from 1:30-3:30 p.m.; Project X missions and lunch, 10:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.; Vegas Night, 7:30-10 p.m. at the Havener Center.
Wednesday, Aug. 17 – Academic workshops continue from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and from 1:30-3:30 p.m.; Project X missions and lunch, 10:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 18 – Academic workshops continue from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and from 1:30-3:30 p.m.; Project X missions and lunch, 10:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 19: – Workshop testing (to test out of lower-level classes), 8:30-10:30 a.m.; Project X Competition, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at various campus locations along the race route; Project X awards, 9 p.m. at the Havener Center.
Saturday, Aug. 20 – Transfer students orientation, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Havener Center.
