UMR alumni and friends can "back the Miners" athletic teams this year by participating in the UMR Chairback Seat Campaign.
As part of renovations to UMR’s Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building, the campus is installing new chairback seating to replace the original wood bleachers on the lower level of the arena. The first new chairback seats were installed in August 2004.
Thanks to a leadership gift from Armin and Norman Tucker, both 1940 mining engineering graduates, the UMR Chairback Seat Campaign is now a reality. Alumni may join the Tucker twins in support of this project by pledging to have their names inscribed on a chairback seat in the arena. Each $1,000 pledge allows donors to name a chairback.
The overall renovation will improve the seating within the arena for those attending basketball games, commencements, the Remmers Special Artist/Lecturer Series, concerts and other events held in the facility. The work will also enhance recruiting efforts to bring more quality scholar-athletes to UMR.
The chairback seats will be installed in three sections on both the north and south sides of the lower bowl of the arena. Sculptured bleacher seating will make up the outside sections on the north and south sides, and additional bleacher sections will be installed on both ends of the floor. Wheelchair cutouts, railings, landings and small steps will make the project friendly to the frail and elderly. The lowest row will be closer to floor level and the seating areas will be more comfortable as there will be more leg room in the seating areas.
In addition, the seats will still be collapsible to retain the multi-purpose nature of the facility, and motors will allow one person to set up and take down the seats.
There is no limit on the number of seats an individual or business may name. Pledges for this project are to be paid in full by June 30, 2005, and are tax deductible as allowed by law. For more information on the project, contact the UMR athletics department at (573) 341-4175.
