Two mine rescue teams from UMR — the only university in the United States to have mine rescue teams — will compete against professional rescuers in the Southern Region Mine Rescue Contest April 29-May 1 in New Iberia, La.

The mine rescue contest is sponsored by the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Cargill Salt of New Iberia.

UMR’s teams will compete against industry mine rescue teams in a simulated mine disaster situation, which will be set up and judged by representatives of MSHA. The teams will be rated on how well they follow basic rules and regulations in carrying out a rescue.
