Miners in the Making, a STEM-focused afterschool program, is now in year two of its five-year MOCAL grant. Operated by the Kummer Center for STEM Education, the program provides safe, high-quality afterschool care for up to 100 Phelps County K–12 students each weekday 3-6 p.m. during the academic year.
Designed to support both academic growth and social-emotional development, Miners in the Making offers a structured, engaging afternoon experience. Students participate in hands-on STEM projects developed and delivered in partnership with Kaleidoscope Discovery Center in Rolla. In addition, program teachers and student staff provide targeted instruction in reading, math, and writing, along with homework assistance and individualized tutoring to reinforce classroom learning.
The afternoon concludes with a wide range of enrichment activities, including games, arts and crafts, physical activity, and science-based play — ensuring that students remain active, creative, and curious.
The program is further strengthened by the involvement of Missouri S&T faculty from multiple departments. Professors lead interactive lessons, facilitate hands-on activities, and host department tours, offering students meaningful exposure to college-level STEM disciplines and pathways.
Transportation is made possible through strong community partnerships. Rolla Public Schools provides the majority of bus service, including transportation for students from Phelps County R-III Schools. The Newburg School District also contributes transportation and additional support.
At its core, Miners in the Making helps children see themselves as capable learners and future leaders. By fostering critical thinking, creativity, and independent exploration, the program is investing in the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.
Space is limited, and only a few openings remain. Families interested in enrolling are encouraged to complete the interest form. For more information, visit stemcenter.mst.edu or call 573-341-6264.
