Joseph W. “Joe” Stahl of Keedysville, Maryland, a 1969 applied mathematics graduate of Missouri University of Science and Technology, was inducted into the S&T Academy of Computer Science during the group’s annual banquet and induction ceremony Thursday, Oct. 2, at Di Trapani’s in Rolla. Stahl earned a master’s degree in computer science from S&T in 1972.

The academy honors outstanding computer scientists for their contributions to the profession and their involvement with Missouri S&T students and faculty. The academy also serves as an advisory group to the computer science department.
Stahl, who also holds an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis, is a retired researcher for McDonnell Douglas Research and the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA). The IDA is a private, nonprofit corporation headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, that uses scientific, technical and analytic expertise to answer challenging U.S. security and policy questions.
During Stahl’s career with the IDA, he authored or co-authored over 50 reports on defense issues. His work focused on the Comanche helicopter and the B-22 aircraft. After retirement, he consulted as needed.
In 2019, Stahl established the Joseph Stahl Sigma Pi Endowed Scholarship, and in 2023, he received the Henry Kyd Douglas Award from the Hagerstown Civil War Roundtable. He is a member of the Company of Military Historians, Hagerstown Civil War Roundtable, North-South Skirmish Association, Save Historic Antietam Foundation and the Washington Blue Rifles.
Stahl co-authored three civil war history books, Identification Discs of Union Soldiers in The Civil War: A Complete Classification Guide and Illustrated History, Faces of Union Soldiers at Antietam and Faces of Union Soldiers at Cul’s Hill: Gettysburg’s Critical Defense.
He also authored over two dozen articles about items in his collections for the Gettysburg Magazine, the Washington Times Civil War Page, Manuscripts, America’s Civil War, Military Collector and Historian: The Journal of the Company of Military Historians, the Civil War Historian and the Skirmish Line of the North-South Skirmish Association.
Stahl has spoken to various Civil War groups, including the Northern Virginia Relic Hunters, South Mountain Coin and Relic Club, Rappahannock, York, Chambersburg and Hagerstown Round Tables, Chambersburg Civil War Tours, Save Historic Antietam Foundation and the National Park Service Antietam. Displays of his collection have won awards at several Civil War shows.
Stahl is a licensed National Park service guide and volunteers as a guide at the Antietam National Battlefield and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.
