The Missouri S&T Kummer Center for STEM Education is teaming up with the university’s Haunted Mine for a free, one-night-only event called “STEM in the Shadows” for K-12 students and their families.

STEM in the Shadows will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at the Experimental Mine, located at 12350 Private Drive 7002 in Rolla. All K-12 students who participate in a STEM Center activity on site will gain free admission to the mine.

Admission costs $15 for adults and children age 11 and older, and $13 for children age 10 and younger, Missouri S&T students and members of the military with valid IDs.

Guests can get a discount of up to $3 per person by bringing canned goods to donate to Russell House ($1 per item). On any open night before Halloween, groups with small children can walk through the mine with the lights on from 5-6 p.m. for $5 per child.

“This will be a spooky and educational Halloween-themed event that takes you deep into a haunted mine, where science and scares meet,” says Roxanne Hanna, associate director of the Kummer Center for STEM Education.

Families with younger children are encouraged to arrive early. From 4-6 p.m., the mine will be open for a “lights-on” tour with limited, non-scary actors. From 6-8 p.m., the full Haunted Mine experience begins with all the thrills, chills and jump scares for which the event is known.
