The nightmarish thrills are back at this year’s Haunted Mine, opening Friday, Oct. 17, at the Experimental Mine at Missouri University of Science and Technology.

The tradition of haunting the mine began in 1997 as a way for Missouri S&T students in mining and explosives engineering to raise funds for competitions conferences. The 2024 Haunted Mine will be open 6-11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17; Saturday, Oct. 18; Friday, Oct. 24; Saturday, Oct. 25; Friday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 1.

On Friday, Oct. 24, the Kummer Center for STEM Education at Missouri S&T will host a “STEM in the Shadows” event. Any K-12 student who participates in a STEM Center activity on site will gain free admission to the Haunted Mine, with lights on from 4-6 p.m. and lights off from 6-8 p.m.

The Haunted Mine includes strobe lights, smoke machines, and jump scares. Closed-toe shoes are required, and flat-bottomed shoes are recommended.

Tickets are $15 for adults and children age 11 and older, and $13 for children age 10 and younger, Missouri S&T students and members of the military with valid IDs. Guests can get a discount of up to $3 per person by bringing canned goods to donate to Russell House ($1 per item). On any open night before Halloween, groups with small children can walk through the mine with the lights on from 5-6 p.m. for $5 per child.

The Experimental Mine is located at 12350 Private Drive 7002 in Rolla, just off Bridge School Road. For more information, contact Stephen Casey, senior academic advisor at S&T, at caseysc@mst.edu
