The Missouri S&T Kummer College has officially launched a new program called Team Innovation Projects to create strong, mutually beneficial collaborations between S&T and industry partners.

“A group of students and faculty members can work on projects for companies as if we’re part of the company, a hired consulting group or even an R&D team,” says Shou Wong, director of corporate partnerships.

Wong was recently hired to develop and lead the program, and he has three core goals for the program: elevate student learning, empower faculty engagement and deliver value to industry.

Students will gain real-world experience while networking with company employees; faculty will apply their expertise to industry problems; and companies will have access to a pool of talented students for potential employees while getting a cost-effective solution for their challenges.

“The Team Innovation Projects offer a new mechanism of engagement with companies, one that is more than internships or co-op experiences and provides even more practical benefit to the company. The deeper engagements will also equip our students to be more competitive when they graduate,” Wong says. “The program will provide a high return on investment for all stakeholders.”

Wong says the cost for the companies will depend on the size and scope of the project, the size of the company, the number of employees and their revenue.
