Dr. Gregory Tschumper, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), has been named the Donald L. Castleman/Foundation for Chemical Research (FCR) Missouri Endowed Professorship of Discovery in the chemistry department at Missouri S&T.

“The faculty and college are thrilled to have Gregory join the group and collaborate with other colleagues on campus using his expertise in theoretical and computational chemistry, as well as spearheading the effort for NSF proposals to support the research of undergraduate students,” says Dr. Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, chair and professor of chemistry at Missouri S&T.

Tschumper’s research combines physics, mathematics and high-performance computing to gain insight into chemical problems, instead of performing experiments in a lab – something that he often calls ‘chemistry without chemicals.’ His research group models chemical structures, energetics and other properties of atomic and molecular systems, as well as chemical processes, by using computers to numerically solve quantum mechanical equations.

Before joining S&T, Tschumper was chair and professor of the chemistry and biochemistry department at the University of Mississippi. He also served as a postdoctoral research associate at Emory University in Atlanta and at ETH-Zentrum, a public research university in Zurich, Switzerland.

Tschumper earned a Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry from the University of Georgia and a bachelor’s degree in both chemistry and mathematics from Winona State University.

He has earned more than $40 million in external grant funding throughout his career, published over 125 journal articles, earned the SEC Faculty Achievement Award in 2021 and was elected an AAAS Fellow in 2020.

The chair was established in part through a gift from Donald L. Castleman, a supporter of Missouri S&T who was awarded an honorary doctorate of engineering by the university in 2002. In addition to the gift, contributions were provided by Missouri S&T’s Foundation for Chemical Research (FCR) and other donors.
