Two engineering management professionals with ties to Missouri University of
Science and Technology were inducted into the Missouri S&T Academy of
Engineering Management on Thursday, April 17. One member was inducted
posthumously.
The academy, established at Missouri S&T in 2004, is an advisory group
to the university’s engineering management department. The two members were
selected based on input from department faculty and development officers and
voted on by the academy membership.
Inducted were:
— Jesse “Tom” McMahan of Alexandria, Va., co-president and founder of
Modern Technology Solutions Inc. McMahan received a bachelor’s degree in
electrical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1966. After working for the
Naval Ordnance Laboratory, McMahan joined the Air Force in 1968, where he spent
25 years working with science and technology programs and weapon systems
acquisition. He worked as director of electronic and special programs in the
Pentagon before accepting his current position.
— Dr. George R. Cuthbertston (posthumously). He received a bachelor’s
degree in chemistry from Jewell College and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in
physical chemistry from Harvard University.
After earning his Ph.D., Cuthbertson joined Uniroyal Inc. as a research
chemist. He spent 34 years with the company, holding many positions including
vice president and general manager of the tire division and vice president of
research and development.
In 1970, Cuthbertson joined Missouri S&T as an associate professor,
later becoming professor in the engineering management department. From
1971-1973, he served as acting department chair while the permanent chair was
on assignment in Vietnam.
