Twenty faculty members from the University of Missouri-Rolla School of Materials, Energy and Earth Resources (SoMEER) received teaching awards during a ceremony on campus May 4. 

SoMEER is home to ceramic engineering, metallurgical engineering, geological engineering, petroleum engineering, geology, geophysics, mining engineering and nuclear engineering programs at UMR. The three departments in SoMEER are materials science and engineering, geological sciences and engineering, and mining and nuclear engineering. The dean is Dr. Mariesa Crow.         

The following are winners of the 2006-2007 Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award, as determined by evaluations from SoMEER students during the past six semesters: 

Faculty members in the School of Materials, Energy and Earth Resources received outstanding teaching awards on May 4.

– Dr. Derek Apel, assistant professor of mining and nuclear engineering      

– Dr. Richard Brow, Curators’ Professor of materials science and engineering

– Dr. Jeffrey Cawlfield, director of freshman engineering and professor of geological sciences and engineering

– Dr. Shari Dunn-Norman, associate professor of geological sciences and engineering

Drs. Van Aken and Miller received the SoMEER Committee for Excellence in Teaching Award.

– Dr. William Fahrenholtz, associate professor of materials science and engineering

– Dr. Larry Grayson, professor of mining and nuclear engineering 

– Dr. Greg Hilmas, associate professor of materials science and engineering

– Dr. Ron Kohser, professor of materials science and engineering

– Dr. Robert Laudon, professor and chair of geological sciences and engineering

– Dr. F. Scott Miller, associate professor of materials science and engineering

– Dr. Gary Mueller, associate professor of mining and nuclear engineering

– Dr. Matt O’Keefe, professor of materials science and engineering

– Dr. Kent Peaslee, Curators’ Teaching Professor of materials science and engineering and Iverson Chair of Steelmaking Technology

– Dr. J. David Rogers, Hasselmann associate professor of geological sciences and engineering

– Dr. Robert Schwartz, professor of materials science and engineering

– Dr. J.D. Smith, associate professor of materials science and engineering

– Dr. David Van Aken, professor of materials science and engineering

– Dr. Paul Worsey, professor of mining and nuclear engineering     

– Dr. David Wronkiewicz, associate professor of geological sciences and engineering.

In addition, Miller and Van Aken also received $500 for winning the SoMEER Committee for Excellence in Teaching Award. The committee received several letters in support of each of these candidates.
