The general public is invited to participate in a number of contests associated with the traditional St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Rolla.

A committee of students at the University of Missouri-Rolla, the St. Pat’s Board, invites community members and organizations to participate in the St. Pat’s Parade by entering the new “Town Float Competition.” Judging for this competition will be separate from the judging of campus organizations. Entries will be evaluated on how well they celebrate this year’s theme, “Super Heroes and/or Super Villains.”

Plaques will be given to the best hero float, the best villain float and the best overall float.

The parade will be held on Saturday, March 17, in downtown Rolla. For more information on participating, contact Michael Guerin at 573-364-6434 or msgxv8@mst.edu .

Among the other St. Pat’s contests open to the general public this year are the following (most contests will be judged after the parade):

Beard contest — Plaques will be given to individuals with the fullest beard and the longest beard.

Sweatshirt contest — A plaque will be given for the oldest, most authentic St. Pat’s sweatshirt that has actually been worn (or worn out).

Store decoration contest — Plaques will be given to three businesses for the best window or in-store decorations.

For more information about these community contests, contact the Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce at 573-364-3577 or Central Federal Savings and Loan Association at 573-364-1024.

Additionally, community members are invited to attend the St. Patrick’s Grand Ball, an event to raise funds for female students at UMR. The ball will be held on St. Patrick’s Day (Saturday, March 17) in the St. Pat’s Ballroom of the Havener Center on the UMR campus. The event starts at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and dancing at 8 p.m. The Kansas City, Mo., ensemble The Radio Kings will perform. The cost is $25 per person.
