Twenty-eight faculty members from the School of Engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla were honored for their teaching in 2005-2006 on Thursday, Nov. 2.

Dr. William Schonberg, interim dean of the UMR School of Engineering, and Dr. Ralph Flori, associate dean for pre-college and undergraduate affairs for the UMR School of Engineering, presented the awards.

The School of Engineering Teaching Excellence Awards are given each year to School of Engineering faculty members based on student responses in teacher evaluations. Recipients of the award taught at least one lecture course each semester that was evaluated by 10 or more students.

Teaching Excellence Awards were presented to:

  • Dr. D.J. Belarbi, Curators’ Teaching Professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering.
  • Dr. James Drewniak, professor of electrical and computer engineering.
  • Dr. David Henthorn, assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering.
  • Dr. Kelly Homan, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
  • Dr. Ronaldo Luna, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering.
  • Dr. Cesar Mendoza, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering.
  • Dr. David Pommerenke, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.
  • Dr. Robert Stone, associate professor of interdisciplinary engineering.
  • Dr. Ganesh Venayagamoorthy, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.
  • Dr. Reza Zoughi, Schlumberger Distinguished Professor of electrical and computer engineering.

The School of Engineering Innovative Teaching Award is given to School of Engineering faculty members who demonstrate innovation in their classroom teaching. The award is presented based on project proposals that are reviewed by a committee of School of Engineering faculty members.

Innovative Teaching Awards were presented to:

  • Dr. Xiaoping Du, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, for his mechatronics program.
  • Dr. Chang-Soo Kim, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, for his hands-on lab development.
  • Dr. Robert Landers, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, for his integration of probability and statistics into engineering courses.

Schonberg also recognized the 15 School of Engineering faculty members who were selected for the campus’s Outstanding Teaching Award for 2005-2006. The Outstanding Teaching Award is given each year to faculty members recognized by a UMR committee, which bases its selections on student evaluations. The award is open to all UMR faculty members except Curators’ Teaching Professors.

Outstanding Teaching award recipients include:

  • Dr. Doug Carroll, professor of interdisciplinary engineering.
  • Dr. Kirk Christensen, adjunct assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
  • Dr. James Drallmeier, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
  • Dr. Xiaoping Du, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
  • Dr. Richard DuBroff, professor of electrical and computer engineering.
  • Dr. David Enke, associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering.
  • Dr. Kelvin Erickson, professor and chair of electrical and computer engineering.
  • Dr. Mehdi Ferdowsi, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering.
  • Dr. Ralph Flori, associate professor of interdisciplinary engineering and associate dean for pre-college and undergraduate affairs for the UMR School of Engineering.
