Two mine rescue teams from UMR — the only university to have such teams — will compete in the annual Mine Rescue Contest Oct. 7-8 at UMR’s Experimental Mine on Bridge School Road in Rolla.

The mine rescue contest is sponsored by the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the mining and nuclear engineering department at UMR.

The UMR team will compete against industry mine rescue teams in a simulated mine disaster situation, which will be set up and judged by representatives of MSHA. The teams will be rated on how well they follow basic rules and regulations in carrying out a rescue and on a written exam. The event includes three other competitions involving first aid, gas testing and maintaining a complex self-contained breathing apparatus.
