Missouri S&T teams win Mid-America ASCE Symposium

Over 30 members of Missouri University of Science and Technology’s student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers competed at the Mid-America Student Symposium this April in Nebraska. This year’s regional symposium was cohosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Missouri S&T’s students competed against teams from 16 other Midwestern universities, bringing home the trophy as the overall symposium winners, and the Steel Bridge Design Team will advance to a national competition next month

Missouri S&T researcher studies how energy shifts could improve tornado predictions

When the National Weather Service (NWS) issues a tornado warning, it’s based on storm rotation, wind patterns and other conditions suggesting a tornado may be imminent. With a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, a Missouri S&T researcher is studying if a new factor could improve prediction accuracy.

S&T community helps with recovery after tornado rips through Rolla

It’s not quite 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 16, and a large group of Missouri S&T students has congregated at a pavilion in Rolla’s Schuman Park, a short distance from the university’s campus.

Just a couple days ago, a sense of merriment filled the air as many of the same students took part in games and a carnival in this same location as part of S&T’s St. Pat’s celebrations. But today, the feeling is a mix of solemness and determination, as everyone has come together to help clean up their community in the aftermath of what appears to be two different tornadoes that went through Rolla.

Conleigh Hardin, a senior in civil engineering from Austin, Texas, attended a large high school but was in a program with fewer than 200 students. She liked the scaled down, personal feeling of it, and when it was time to decide on a college, she chose Missouri S&T for its size relative to the huge engineering colleges closer to home.
