When every second feels like an eternity: S&T student develops model to support 911 centers
“When people call 911, they are usually in a perilous situation — often between life and death — and need help quickly,” says Ademola Adesokan, a Ph.D. student in computer science. “But depending on the quantity of calls coming in at once and the amount of time spent on each call at the 911 center, they may have a delayed response during a time in which every second or minute can seem like an eternity.”

Soon-to-be S&T graduate: When in doubt, just remember ‘Sí se puede’
When students doubt their ability to succeed or are unsure about their plans for after high school, Raphael “Tito” Marzo has a simple but powerful message for them: “Sí se puede” — or “Yes you can.”
This is the same message Marzo, who will graduate in December with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Missouri S&T, heard countless times four years ago when he attended the Sí Se Puede program coordinated by the university’s student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).
‘A relentless practicality’
When Dr. Joshua P. Schlegel envisioned what his career would be like during his youth, he says he didn’t anticipate he would one day be an award-winning educator.
But that’s exactly what he is, as he was recently recognized at Missouri S&T’s annual faculty awards banquet as a 2024 recipient of the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Missouri S&T commencement speakers announced
More than 600 Missouri University of Science and Technology graduates will be awarded degrees during three upcoming ceremonies this December. Dr. Harold R. “Skip” Garner, chief scientific officer at Orbit Genomics, will speak at the Dec. 13 ceremony. William R. Kennedy, CEO of Jack Kennedy Metal Products and Buildings Inc., will speak at both Dec. 14 ceremonies.
