It’s 4 a.m. on a Monday and custodians throughout S&T’s academic buildings are clocking in to begin their shifts while most of us are still sleeping. Custodians like Gene Morton and Billy Whitaker in Bertelsmeyer Hall begin their workday this early to prepare classrooms and offices before students, faculty and staff arrive.

Researchers use amino acids to grow high-performance copper thin films

Fall enrollment at Missouri S&T more than 7,600, applications up for 2021

The fall 2020 enrollment at Missouri S&T, officially recorded at the end of the semester’s fourth week, is 7,645. This is a 5.6% decrease over last year’s fall enrollment of 8,096. Research links sinking land to regions of high groundwater demand

Excessive pumping from underground aquifers can cause the surrounding land to sink and lead to damage to streets, bridges and other infrastructure, reduced groundwater storage, and contaminated drinking water, according to researchers at Missouri S&T. They are using a form of artificial intelligence known as machine learning to map the sinking – called land subsidence – to help water policy officials make informed decisions.

Launching satellites to learn, despite a pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic did not allow Missouri S&T to host its popular summer camps for elementary and high school students in person during the summer of 2020. As a result, S&T held its first-ever virtual summer camp focused on space. The camp culminated in a satellite launch event to witness more than a dozen camper-built small satellites travel 100,000 feet into the air on a high-altitude balloon. Campers tracked the flight in August and later received images and data captured by the satellites from the edge of space.
