World War II historian’s latest book looks at the realities of aerial combat

“Deadly Sky: The American Combat Airman in World War II,” released in a new paperback edition on Tuesday, Aug. 2, takes an in-depth look at the dog fights that took place in the clouds above the European and the Pacific theaters of World War II. The book shares many personal accounts of American combat airmen between 1941 and 1945.

New book tells the stories of U.S. soldiers who liberated concentration camps

On April 4, 1945, American soldiers from the 89th Infantry Division and the 4th Armored Division seized Ohrdruf, the first Nazi concentration camp liberated in Germany during World War II. Military historian Dr. John C. McManus sheds new light on the experiences of the American soldiers who liberated and witnessed Ohrdruf, Buchenwald and Dachau in his new book, “Hell Before Their Very Eyes: American Soldiers Liberate Concentration Camps in Germany, April 1945.”

S&T military historian earns National Endowment for the Humanities grant

Dr. John C. McManus, Curators’ Professor of history and political science at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has earned a Public Scholar grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to support McManus’ research for a new two-volume history of the U.S. Army in the Pacific and Asian theater during World War II. The NEH announced the award today (Tuesday, July 28).

S&T students to experience war memories during trip to France
