S&T historian wins state book award

Dr. John C. McManus, associate professor of history at Missouri University of Science and Technology, recently received the 2008 Missouri Conference on History Book Award. The award is given to the best book on any historical topic written by a Missouri resident published in 2007. McManus received the award for his book Alamo in the Ardennes: The Untold Story of the American Soldiers Who Made the Defense of Bastogne Possible.”

McManus began his career at Missouri S&T as a history instructor in 2000 and was named assistant professor in 2003. He was named associate professor in 2007. He teaches courses on the Civil War, World War II, the Vietnam War, U.S. military history and the modern American combat experience.

He has received two Missouri S&T history and political science department faculty excellence awards and three campus faculty excellence awards.

Alamo in the Ardennes is McManus’ fifth book. Earlier this year, he published his sixth book U.S. Military History for Dummies. His seventh book, The 7th Infantry Regiment: Combat in an Age of Terror: The Korean War Through the Present, will be published May 13.

In 2007, History News Network selected McManus as one of America’s Top Young Historians.
