UMR dean of arts and sciences Paula Lutz to head Montana program
Dr. Paula Lutz, dean of the University of Missouri-Rolla College of Arts and Sciences since 2002, has announced plans to leave UMR in June to direct the College of Letters and Science at Montana State University in Bozeman.

UMR's Tien appointed to federal panel on mine ventilation
Dr. Jerry Tien, an associate professor of mining engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla, has been appointed to a federal panel that will study the use of conveyor belt tunnels in ventilating underground coal mines. The study also will look at the composition and fire-retardant properties of conveyor belt materials.

Fire reported at UMR residence hall
Approximately 150 University of Missouri-Rolla students were evacuated this morning from the Thomas Jefferson Residence Hall Complex on the UMR campus after a fire in the cafeteria was reported to Rolla Fire and Rescue.

UMR enrollment is 5,308
Enrollment on the first day of classes at the University of Missouri-Rolla is expected to be 5,308, a 6.1 percent increase from last year’s first-day enrollment, says Laura Stoll, UMR registrar.

Krishnamurthy named vice provost for research at UMR
Dr. K. Krishnamurthy has been named vice provost for research at the University of Missouri-Rolla, effective Jan. 1, 2007.

Classes to resume Wednesday
Classes at the University of Missouri-Rolla will resume tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb. 28), after a threat affecting the civil engineering building forced officials to close the campus today.

Follow-up news conference in Rolla scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
The City of Rolla will host a follow-up news conference at 11:30 a.m. this morning about the situation on the University of Missouri-Rolla campus. The news conference will be held in the Council Chambers at Rolla City Hall located at 901 N. Elm St. in downtown Rolla.

UMR campus returns to normal
Federal, state, local and campus law enforcement officials have concluded their on-site investigation into the threat posed by a UMR student which prompted a cancellation of classes at the University of Missouri-Rolla today, Tuesday, Feb. 27. All campus facilities have resumed normal operation.

All classes at the University of Missouri-Rolla have been cancelled for Tuesday, Feb. 27, due to a threat affecting the Butler-Carlton Civil Building on campus.

At approximately 2:32 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, the University of Missouri-Rolla Police Department responded to a call regarding a UMR student who was threatening terrorist type actions.

KUMR spring membership drive starts March 3
Public radio station KUMR at the University of Missouri-Rolla begins its Spring Membership Drive at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 3, with its popular bluegrass program, “Bluegrass for a Saturday Night.” The drive runs through the following Sunday, March 11.

General Motors Corp. recently donated more than $100,000 to the University of Missouri-Rolla through GM’s Partners in Excellence grant program.

Kisslinger makes $1 million estate pledge to UMR
Dr. Fred Kisslinger, former professor of metallurgical engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla, has pledged $1 million from his estate to UMR. The gift will help support UMR’s materials science and engineering department and the UMR athletic department.

Restructuring plan to take effect July 1
The University of Missouri-Rolla is moving forward with an administrative restructuring plan that will enhance direct interaction between departments and the provost’s office.

Researchers to discuss near-field methods at St. Louis conference
Advances in near-field methods, used in applications ranging from high-resolution imaging to electromagnetic compatibility, will be the focus of ICONIC 2007, the third annual International Conference on Electromagnetic Near-Field Characterization and Imaging.

UMR enters into mining engineering partnership with the University of Botswana
A delegation from the University of Botswana recently traveled to the University of Missouri-Rolla to formalize an agreement to collaborate on mining engineering endeavors.

UMR to purchase larger air whistle
The sound volume of the July 10 air whistle test on the University of Missouri-Rolla campus remained inadequate following efforts to increase the volume. Faculty and staff at several locations on campus reported being unable to hear the whistle or hearing a whistle that was not loud enough to penetrate to the interiors of many campus buildings.

KUMR to become KMST
Public radio station KUMR will change its name to KMST on Monday, July 16. The change takes effect at 12:01 a.m.

UMR air whistle test update
Due to a lack of air volume, UMR’s campus air whistle failed to produce enough sound to be heard across campus during its Friday, July 6, test. There was enough air pressure, but not enough air volume reaching the whistle to allow it to reach its full sound potential, physical facilities officials say.

UMR to test air whistle alert system
The University of Missouri-Rolla will test a new air whistle alarm system at 10 a.m. Friday, July 5. The test will last approximately two minutes.

UMR environmental engineering program earns ABET accreditation
The bachelor of science degree program in environmental engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla has been accredited by ABET Inc., formerly known as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Employers flock to UMR in record numbers
On Sept. 27, the University of Missouri-Rolla will host what has become possibly the largest university career fair in the state. This career fair is expected to be even bigger than the one UMR hosted last fall -- an event that attracted more than 250 employers to campus, setting a university record.

UMR to test larger air whistle Sept. 20
The University of Missouri-Rolla will test a larger air whistle to be used during campus emergencies at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. The test, which will last less than one minute, will allow campus officials to determine how well the alarm can be heard across campus.

UMR students are trying to build the perfect solar house
Students at the University of Missouri-Rolla are getting pretty good at designing and building solar houses. This fall, the UMR Solar House Team will once again enter a house in the US. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, a student design competition to be held in Washington, D.C., Oct. 12-20

For the first time in more than two decades, the University of Missouri-Rolla expects to exceed the 6,000-student mark for fall enrollment. Enrollment on the first day of classes is expected to be 5,986, an increase of 323 students over that of fall 2006, says UMR Registrar Laura Stoll.

UMR boosts campus safety with new emergency alert system
In an ongoing effort to provide the most secure academic environment possible, administrators at the University of Missouri-Rolla will implement a mass notification system (MNS) to help ensure the safety of the UMR campus. The MNS, which is scheduled to go live on Nov. 30, will deliver information and instructions in the event of an emergency to all UMR students, faculty and staff.

UMR historian simplifies military history for dummies
This fall, University of Missouri-Rolla author and military historian John C. McManus will release his sixth book on military history, a down-to-earth study that covers everything from the French and Indian War through the war in Iraq. The book, titled U.S. Military History for Dummies, will be released Nov. 12.

UMR unveiled a new look for its main website today (Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007) in preparation for the university’s name change on Jan. 1, when it becomes Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T).

‘72 grad named president of University of Missouri System
Gary Forsee, former chief executive of Sprint Nextel and a 1972 civil engineering graduate of the University of Missouri-Rolla, was chosen today (Thursday, Dec. 20) by the University of Missouri Board of Curators as the system’s 22nd president.
