Henry Wiebe named vice provost for UMR Global
Dr. Henry Wiebe, professor and chair of engineering management at the University of Missouri-Rolla, has been appointed vice provost for UMR Global effective Feb. 1, 2003.
Alumna Cheryl Walker named to UM Board of Curators
UMR graduate Cheryl Walker, counsel with the firm of Bryan Cave LLP in St. Louis, has been named to the UM System Board of Curators. Missouri Gov. Bob Holden announced Walker's appointment today.
Debra Robinson named vice chancellor for student affairs
Dr. Debra A.G. Robinson, the former associate vice chancellor for student and international affairs at UMR, became the campus's vice chancellor for student affairs on Jan. 1. She succeeded Dr. Wendell R. Ogrosky, UMR's first vice chancellor for student affairs, who joined UMR in August 1987 and who retired on Dec. 31.

Dr. Greg Gelles, chair and professor of economics and finance at the University of Missouri-Rolla, has been named dean of Mazoon College in Muscat, Oman. Gelles will take over for Dr. Juma S. Al Ghailani, the school's founding dean, for a two-year term.
Expert in southern women writers named 2004 Maxwell C. Weiner Professor at UMR
Dr. Anne Goodwyn Jones, an expert in women writers of the American South, has been named the fourth Maxwell C. Weiner Distinguished Professor of Humanities at the University of Missouri-Rolla. She will begin her tenure in UMR's English department in January 2004.
UMR professor's research into minimizing electrical power grid blackouts wins engineering award
Dr. G.K. Venayagamoorthy, assistant professor in the electrical and computer engineering department at UMR, and two colleagues recently received a second-place paper award from the Industrial Automation and Control Committee (IACC) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Industry Applications Society for their research into the use of advanced intelligent techniques to operate electric power plants close to their limits. The intelligent control techniques, if implemented on a power grid, could potentially minimize blackouts that result from small and large disturbances.

Gerald Cohen, professor of foreign languages at the University of Missouri-Rolla, recently completed the third and final volume of his Dictionary of 1913 Baseball and Other Lingo. Its material is taken primarily from the baseball columns of the San Francisco Bulletin newspaper between February and May of 1913.

Honorary professional degrees to be awarded at UMR commencement ceremonies December 20
UMR will award six honorary professional degrees during its winter commencement Saturday, Dec. 20.
UMR doctoral student, student chapter recognized by Association of Engineering Geologists
Briget Doyle of Holland, Mich., a doctoral student in geological engineering at UMR, recently received the "Outstanding Student Professional Paper, Graduate Division" award from the Association of Engineering Geologists at its annual meeting in Vail, Colo., for her research into the 1811-12 New Madrid earthquake series, the largest to ever hit the United States.
UMR researcher receives fellowship from National Highway Institute
Dr. John Myers, assistant professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at UMR, recently received a 2004 Eisenhower Faculty Fellowship from the National Highway Institute. The fellowships are presented to faculty in transportation-related fields to help them improve their transportation expertise.
UMR researcher receives young engineer award
Dr. Robert Landers, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at UMR, was recently selected to receive a 2004 M. Eugene Merchant Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).
