Harvey Mudd president to discuss getting more women into tech careers

Dr. Maria Klawe, president of Harvey Mudd College and creator of an initiative to get more women to study computer science, will visit Missouri University of Science and Technology on Monday, April 25, to deliver a public lecture titled “Getting more women into tech careers.”

Klawe will speak at 10 a.m. Monday in the Carver-Turner Room of the Havener Center on campus. The event is open to the public.

Missouri S&T computer science department hosts distinguished speaker series

As part of its yearlong Golden Jubilee, Missouri University of Science and Technology’s computer science department is highlighting world-renowned faculty and government and national campus leaders through its Distinguished Colloquium Speaker series.

The series, which runs March 7 to May 2, features six speakers from around the country.

“They all are top-class computer scientists and hold very respected positions,” says Dr. Sajal Das, professor and chair of computer science and the Daniel C. St. Clair Endowed Chair in computer science at Missouri S&T.

Forty-one Missouri University of Science and Technology faculty members will receive the Outstanding Teaching Award for 2014-2015. The winners will be recognized at a ceremony scheduled t 1:30 p.m. p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, in St. Pat’s Ballroom A of the Havener Center. The Outstanding Teaching Award is given each year to faculty members by the Outstanding Teaching Award Committee, which bases its selections on student evaluations.

Four alumni honored by S&T computer science academy

Four alumni of Missouri University of Science and Technology with ties to the computer science department were inducted into the Missouri S&T Academy of Computer Science during the group’s banquet and induction ceremony, held Oct. 22, 2015, at Matt’s Steakhouse in Rolla. The academy honors outstanding computer scientists for their contributions to the profession and their involvement with Missouri S&T students and faculty. The academy also serves as an advisory group to the computer science department.

McMillin elected to IEEE Computer Society Board

Dr. Bruce M. McMillin, professor of computer science and associate dean of the College of Engineering and Computing at Missouri University of Science and Technology, was elected to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society Board of Governors.

The IEEE is the world’s leading membership organization for professionals in all aspects of advancing techology, and the computer society is the largest of the 39 IEEE technical societies.

To kick off its 50th anniversary Golden Jubilee, Missouri University of Science and Technology’s computer science department is bringing in entrepreneur, CEO and computer science technology pace-setter Tan Le as the keynote speaker.

The Golden Jubilee marks the 50th anniversary of Missouri S&T’s computer science degree program. As the first school in Missouri to offer degrees in computer science, the Golden Jubilee is a time for the school to reflect on and celebrate the past 50 years while looking to the future.

Researchers study users to increase cyber security

Missouri University of Science and Technology researchers are working to build a framework to study the online behavior of Internet users and how that behavior affects the safety of systems and networks.

Dr. Maggie Cheng, associate professor of computer science at Missouri S&T, and Dr. Fiona Nah, professor of business and information technology at Missouri S&T, are working with a two-year grant from the National Science Foundation. The researchers are looking to design experiments to study the characteristics of user behavior, Cheng says, creating a theoretical framework to study human cyber behavior.

Missouri S&T computer teams can hack it in competition

Missouri University of Science and Technology will kick off a Golden Jubilee celebration marking the 50th anniversary of its computer science department with a competition designed to help society through computing.

The Hackathon for Humanity (H4H) contest kickoff runs from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, in Room 209 of the computer science building with live streaming for remote participation. For more details, see the H4H website.
