Ph.D. student from India headed to international Toastmasters speech contest

Update, Friday, Aug. 22, 2014: Sudharshan Anandan finished third in the semi-final round of the international competition.

When Sudharshan Anandan first arrived in Rolla, Missouri, from his native India in 2012, the Ph.D. student at Missouri University of Science and Technology struggled with the English language. “When I first got here, it took more than 15 minutes just to order a sandwich at Subway,” he says. Tatiana Lopes, an undergraduate student from Brazil, conducted light and shadow studies on the roof of Phelps County Bank’s downtown drive-through as part of the solar installation project.

Phelps County Bank’s downtown Rolla location will be drawing some of its power from the sun next spring, thanks to a partnership between the bank and Missouri University of Science and Technology. The historic four-story building at 718 N. Pine was once the Edwin Long Hotel and has been the home of Phelps County Bank (PCB) for more than 50 years. [Read more…]
