Dr. Nancy J. Stone, professor of psychology at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., has been named chair of psychology at Missouri University of Science and Technology. Her appointment begins July 1.

Stone will take over for Dr. Frances H. Montgomery, Curators’ Teaching Professor of psychology at Missouri S&T, who is serving as interim chair.

“We are pleased to have a person with Dr. Stone’s background and experience to lead Missouri S&T’s psychology department,” says Provost Warren K. Wray. “She brings excellent credentials, experience and leadership skills to the department. She will make a great addition to our faculty and I look forward to working with her.”

“I am truly excited about joining Missouri S&T,” says Stone. “I believe the psychology department has a great deal to offer not only to our majors, but also to others across campus and in the community.”

Stone’s research is focused in four areas: group dynamics, specifically team work behaviors; environmental design, studying how things like color or windows can impact performance, motivation, mood or satisfaction; student learning and training; and the interview process, studying the interview as an assessment of organizational fit.

Stone has taught in the psychology department at Creighton University since 1989. She was named professor in 2006. From 1988-89, Stone served as assistant professor of psychology and mental health at the University of Minnesota, Duluth.

During her professional career, Stone has received multiple research fellowships with the NASA Ames Research Center and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Her work has been published in numerous professional journals and presented at professional conferences.

In addition to her teaching duties, Stone serves as a consultant to the school of medicine in program evaluation at Creighton University. She has also consulted on various projects for the Wesley House and a regional bank in Omaha and has served as an expert witness on discrimination in hiring and promotion cases.

Stone received a Ph.D. in experimental psychology with an emphasis in industrial and organizational psychology from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. She also holds a master of arts degree from Texas Tech University and a bachelor of arts degree in experimental psychology from the University of California, San Diego.
